AP Top 25: A new No. 1, and Michigan falls again after win

A 10-point win over Arkansas State didn’t impress voters in the weekly AP Top 25 poll, who dropped defending national champions Michigan for a third straight week.

The Wolverines fell one spot, from No. 17 to 18, in this week’s media poll after getting back on the winning track with a 28-18 victory over the Sun Belt Conference foe on Saturday. And while Michigan ran for 301 yards and three touchdowns in the game, it also had three interceptions and benched starting quarterback Davis Warren midway through the third quarter.

Michigan’s No. 18 ranking marks its lowest point in the AP poll since Sept. 19, 2021, when it jumped from 25 to 19. Sherrone Moore’s team began the season ranked ninth but has fallen in the poll every week since.

Meanwhile, a new No. 1 has emerged in college football, with Texas jumping Georgia for the top spot following a 56-7 win over UTSA. Georgia edged Kentucky, 13-12, to remain unbeaten and fall to No. 2. Ohio State, Alabama and Ole Miss all held their spots from last week, rounding out the top five.

The biggest jump this week belonged to Miami and Northern Illinois, who each rose two spots to No. 8 and No. 23 respectively. Penn State experienced the biggest drop, falling two spots to No. 10 while on a bye.

Oregon and Southern Cal continue to hang around the top 10, checking in at No. 9 and No. 11 respectively, while fellow Big Ten school Nebraska rose one spot to No. 22 and Illinois joined the rankings at No. 24.

Michigan (2-1) will host USC on Saturday in Ann Arbor (3:30 p.m., CBS), an opportunity for the Wolverines to reclaim some momentum and rise again in the polls. They also fell one spot in this week’s US LBM coaches’ poll, from No. 16 to 17.
